ART, ARCHITECTURE, & INTERIOR DESIGN IN THE HUDSON VALLEY

The New Newburgh

Updated: Apr 2, 2018

Situated on the western bank of the Hudson just a little more than an hour north of New York City lies Newburgh the prettiest town you've never been to in the Hudson Valley.

Oh, you may have been once or twice. Like most, you probably drove through, saw the poverty and hopelessness and quickly moved on to your next winery. I was the same way. But something kept drawing me back. Each time I would drive a little slower, turn up a different street, and discover something new and amazing. #Newburgh may be down on its luck but its a gem of a city.

Home to Washington's Headquarters, its #colonialhistory runs deep. In many ways, this town never really changed or grew after the the late 1800's. You don't see the spattering of #artdeco buildings from the 20's, there isn't a blight of boxy buildings from the 50's and 60's, and you don't see the horrible makeovers from the 70's and 80's. Many of these buildings #interiors are as stuck in the past as their facades.

If you want to check out some of the amazing #architectural #restorations taking place in Newburgh, the website Newburgh Restoration has some great before-and-after photos.

The old Kreisel's Furniture store is one of the few examples of more #modernarchitecture but even this building is decades old. There have been recent attempts to turn it into a lounge that met a dead end in court. It still sits empty and derelict to this day but something is happening behind those doors. Maybe one day it will be a furniture store again.

Just next door is the #RitzTheater with a rich history of its own. #EllaFitzgerald and #FrankSinatra played here. In 1941, #LucilleBall and #DesiArnez did their first #vaudeville show together at this theater. This would be the start of the #ILoveLucy show.

#WashingtonsHeadquarters sits in the center of town and all of Newburgh is surrounded by the majestic mountains of the #HudsonHighlands. It is quite stunning. Directly across the Hudson from Newburgh lies its 'prettier' little sister city, #Beacon. You can reach Beacon via the bridge or a ferry that takes you straight to the Beacon stop on the #HudsonLine of #MetroNorth. The ferry is just $1.75 each way.

#Art is alive and well in Newburgh. Artists are slowly discovering this sleepy little town and local #artists are beginning to emerge. The town of Newburgh has a rich #AfricanAmerican history and it would be a shame to see this town gentrify and lose that #culture, #history and local flavor. But locals tell me Newburgh is trying to do things right this time.

This installation by renowned #photographer Dmitri Kasterine, an #octogenarian, captures and celebrates the resilience and humanity of the residents of Newburgh. #DimitriKasterine also made a documentary as part of that project. Be sure to watch it.

New #restaurants and #shops are beginning to open up. The locals highly recommend Calabash Jamaican Restaurant, comfort food at its finest. You'll also find unusual. places like #SeoulKitchen, serving home-style #Koreanfood with outdoor seating. And there is #CaffeMacchiato, a European-style bistro serving up a delightful breakfast and lunch with some of the best coffee around.

And new stores are slowly opening, like #NewburghMercantile. It has an amazing frame shop on site and great gifts, many by local #HudsonValley artists.

But the highlights are the #architecture and the possibilities. This city has the right foundation to finally be a great city. Easy access to trains and buses. Only an hour drive to the city at the center of the world, #Manhattan. Minutes from world class #hiking and #outdooractivities. The homes here are a steal but they need a lot of work and love. And more than anything, this city needs folks who want to work with the locals to make it a #habitat that everyone can call #home.
